I stopped watching Smallville somewhere around the middle of season three, but have recently watched a few of the latest eps, and something is just driving me crazy. Who is that woman playing Lex's minion with the glasses? I've never managed to catch her character's name but I have checked the IMDB for Smallville and couldn't spot anyone who looked like her, and I've looked on the WB site and didn't find her, and she looks SO familiar. (Actually, she looks a lot like Tina Fay but I'm pretty sure it's not.) Someone on my flist must know who she is. Right? :::looks at flist hopefully:::

Just watched the last ep of Murdoch Mysteries for the season, and this one really tickled me with its tale of mysterious Martian murders. There were some great little homages/fanservice bits to UFO lore and science fiction shows. "Concession 51" had me snickering, and that whole final conversation about where they would situate an 'alien base' made me really laugh out loud. dialogue quoted behind the cut )

I hope the show gets picked up for another season. I really enjoyed it.

From the IMDB Studio Briefing today:

Jericho, the CBS television series that was canceled because of low ratings, then revived following protests from fans, then canceled again because of low ratings, may be revived a second time, the New York Times reported today (Monday). The newspaper said that CBS may follow NBC's recent example with Friday Night Lights in which it sold the DirecTV satellite service the right to air the series before it goes on network TV. The Times said that CBS is considering a similar option in negotiations with cable provider Comcast. Meanwhile, although DirecTV executives have expressed confidence that the Friday Night Lights deal could drive new subscribers to their service, some analysts are expressing skepticism about its ability to do so and forecasting that the DirecTV episodes will wind up being pirated on the Internet.

Hmm.... I'll believe it when I see it.

Still liking this season of Jericho muchly, but I do have a minor quibble about last night's ep. behind a cut to spare the uninterested or delayed-viewers. Spoilers behind the cut and in comments, obviously. )

Also? ReGenesis yet again anticipates the news by a year or so.

Just in case you were trying to actually watch the show, in its infinite wisdom TPTB have decided to schedule an episode on Thursday (check local listings for time), And then next week, to confuse us further, it apparently moves to its 'real' timeslot on Monday (check local listings for time).

Gee, anyone would think a) this is Fox and b) they want the show to fail...

Oh, wait...

(Seriously, I haven't seen scheduling this bad since Space: Above & Beyond.)

New Amsterdam was watchable. Certainly not the worst show to come down the pike, but it feels a bit tentative as of yet. (I don't think any of these comments are particularly spoilery so I'm not cutting them.) I'm not sure what narrative purpose the partner serves, since she's not there for UST, and didn't seem to have a lot to do in the ep, but I'll definitely give it time to settle in. Also, they need someone who's better at applying fake facial hair. To my dismay, about 2/3rds of the way through the ep, I realized that Nicolaj Coster-Waldau (I love that name!) looks like a more Hollywood version of a friend of mine's husband so it's a little weird to find him attractive, but I do. ;D

ReGenesis has started it's last season :( and I spent the first episode of it alternating between happiness over all because it's just so darn good, and spoilers behind the cut )

And then there was Jericho. Okay, I'll admit it. I was genuinely shocked by last night's ending. I'm so used to them leading us down the garden path in the trailers that I really didn't think anything about their spoilery warning in the commercials. But... but... spoilers behind the cut )

I hear Women's Murder Club will be back, for at least the last three eps of the season, sometime in April. So we hopefully will get to see the rest of Joe Flanagan's stint as a Fibbie. (If he can work it into his SGA filming schedule.) And, hey! Maybe between now and April, Angie Harmon will eat something and gain an ounce or two. I also hear Nicholas Brendon will be back in a few more eps of Criminal Minds. This makes me happy. :)

The final few eps of Jericho are still making me happy. This week's ep had great pacing, I was really on the edge of my seat!

Ashes to Ashes is much better than I expected. I love Keeley Hawes as DI Alex Drake, she's a great character, and she's got real chemistry with Philip Glenister/Gene Hunt. (Is it odd that I occasionally find myself nostalgic over her wardrobe? I mean, the 80's...) ;D

Primeval is over for the season which makes me sad. I would be upset with certain developments in the last episode, but I have a feeling that as is often the case in SciFi shows, the condition is not permanent.

Speaking of SciFi shows and possibly temporary conditions... I have a spoilery question about Torchwood 2x08 - A Day in the Death )

Project Runway: Read more... )

Oh, and I recently watched a little something called Being Human that I hear is possibly a BBC pilot, and I thought it was excellent. I'd love to see more of it, if it gets picked up.

The return of Jericho is making me happy so far. It does not hurt that I think Esai Morales is v. v. hunky in a kind of rough-edged George Clooney sort of way. I hope Maj. Beck turns out to be an innocent dupe or something so I don't have to feel guilty for finding him attractive. :) Actually, all my current TV is making me fairly happy. Project Runway has been really good this season, and Kyle XY, Stargate: Atlantis, Sarah Connor Chronicles have all been, for the most part, keeping me pleased. Ghosthunters International was kind of lame but at least it's been entertaining watching the incredibly credulous Barry and Brian scare each other half to death. I've been loving Torchwood this season-- it's head and shoulders better than last season, thank heavens. And Primeval is a blast, with its intrepid yet slightly hapless good guys versus CGI dinosaurs, sulpherous worms, and a Wonderbra-enhanced MadMaxian femme fatale! Also, [livejournal.com profile] ardent_muses has introduced me to Band of Brothers, which so far (2.25 eps in) is excellent!

Also, this has been a great week, cooking wise. Saturday night I had [livejournal.com profile] ardent_muses over for a belated birthday dinner and the Beef Stroganoff turned out perfectly, as did the Guinness Cake for dessert. Actually, it wasn't a real Guinness cake, as I used a St. Peter's Cream Stout instead, but it was just as good. :) Then Sunday night I made a big pot of navy-bean and ham soup. I was so happy with how it turned out, the beans just meltingly tender and the broth all smoky from the ham. Mmmmm. Then tonight I tried reproducing a recipe my kidunit loves at a local restaurant, and it turned out both fairly easy and really yummy. I'm typing up the recipe here so I don't forget it.

I watched a couple of eps of "How to Look Good Naked" this weekend and was... favorably impressed. I think Carson Kressley must be every woman's Fantasy Gay Best Friend. The show reminded me a bit of Tim Gunn's Guide to Style only more over the top. I love the fact that there was no Dominatrix Stacey and Supercilious Clinton looking down their noses at the makeover-ee. I was also pleasantly surprised by how many passers-by had complimentary things to say about the plus-sized women.

I had a nice, relaxing weekend. It was nice not to have a big holiday to prep for. :) I got my monthly pedicure, and did some leisurely chores around the house, and read a lot (currently re-reading MZB's "Darkover" series) and watched a whole bunch of amusingly bad television. Basically I parked myself in front of the TV with the SciFi Channel on and watched: Manticore (wow, Robert Beltran has not aged well...); Wraiths of Roanoke (one of Adrian Paul’s better post-Highlander efforts, which isn't saying much); Minotaur (mmm, half-nekkid Tony Todd!); Abominable (wherein the creature bore an eerie resemblance to the late Jack Elam); Sasquatch Mountain (Lance Henriksen saves the day from lame-ass bank-robbers and Sasquatch at the same time!); Beyond Loch Ness (probably the best SFCOM I've seen to date); and Eye of the Beast (James van der Beek vs. giant freshwater squid on the Canadian side of Lake Superior!). Boy howdy, I am B-movied out. ;D

And in the news, I think this fellow must have done the same thing. Either that, or Torchwood needs to put a leash on Myfanwy.

For those of you who are Joe Flanigan fans, he's apparently on head-to-head with himself tomorrow night (Friday, January 4th). He'll be in the new Stargate Atlantis ep on SciFi, opposite a guest role as an FBI dude on a new (and last new one for a while due to the writer's strike) ep of Women's Murder Club on ABC. Why do I find that oddly amusing? (Could possibly be in part because I still think he looks like the bastard love-child of David Duchovny and Kyan Douglas.)

And speaking of SGA folks, in other TV news, Paul McGillion will be in SciFi Channel's latest bad movie of the week on Saturday night. "Beyond Loch Ness." Looks like an instant classic. For MST3K anyway. ;D (I actually kind of get a kick out of these awful things-- they don't take themselves seriously. And SFC's current batch of commercials for 'the most dangerous night on television' are a hoot!)

Thanks to everyone who sent me birthday wishes! Also for the v-gift!! I tried to reply to everyone but my flist was at something like skip=300 since my last login and I may have missed some. Friday night the kidunit and the housemate took me out for dinner at Outback Steakhouse which was yummy as usual, and then to Glacier Ice Cream for dessert. I had a new flavor there-- raspberry rocky road (which they apparently whipped up in honor of the Rockies) and it was fantastic. I hope it comes into regular rotation with their other flavors. ::snrch:: I just noticed this note on their website: Printed on Recycled Data™

Next day [livejournal.com profile] ardent_muses came up from Denver and we hung out all day. First we went to the Farmer's Market (the last one of the season) and got some wonderful things (Haystack Mountain rosemary chevre, Mou Cou camembert, tomatoes, kale, fresh roasted poblano chilies, a Carnival squash, and a handful of honeystix), then we went to McGuckin Hardware because I needed something but I couldn't remember what it was. We wandered around picking up random goodies until I finally remembered (a humidfier filter!) and Ardent ended up with a new pie plate and a few other things from their amazing Housewares section. After that we rented The Illusionist and The Prestge and had a magical (or should that be illusory?) afternoon. We watched The Illusionist first, then went out for a really good Italian dinner (Ardent had vegetarian lasagne, kidunit had a feta, olive and sausage pizza that they made up special for him since it wasn't even on the menu, and I had a chicken/proscuitto/asparagus dish I can't remember the name of but was really, really good!), then watched The Prestige. The Illusionist was enjoyable mostly for Edward Norton and Paul Giammatti's performances, but we both (Ardent and I) really enjoyed The Prestige. Well, Ardent liked the ending, not sure how she felt about the whole shebang. I liked it all. Especially David Bowie as Tesla. (I know Tesla was more than a tad nuts but he was also a genius and I kind of <3 him. I am afraid I inflicted Tesla Trivia on poor Ardent!) :) Then sadly, Ardent had to go home and I finished off the evening by peeling and seeding the roasted poblano chilies I bought at the farmer's market. Can't wait to make rellenos!

Today it was brunch with the extended family (i.e. my mom, brother, s-i-l and the three of us from my household), which was nice and relaxing. Then I spent the rest of the day doing the things I'd neglected in order to have fun... grocery shopping and laundry. While doing laundry I managed to watch this week's Blood Ties, which continues to please me. I had to snicker this week at Henry's "Come along, Renfield." to Mike. Hee!

PS: I can sure tell it's NaNoWriMo... the number of posts to [livejournal.com profile] little_details has just exploded.

For those of you who were watching it before the interminable and inexplicable break between pieces of its first season (which they are now, for some reason, calling Season 1 & 2), Blood Ties starts back up tonight. Also premiering tonight is The Women's Murder Club on ABC which looks interesting, and Odyssey 5 on SciFi which I talked about a couple of days ago.

In other news, those wacky fundies are at it again. (Warning: link goes to an unpleasant news story which may provoke inappropriate laughter and schadenfreude in many liberals.)

Also, I don't think this is what they meant when they said "write what you know." (Warning on this one for high ick-factor.)

SciFi has picked up a 5-year old Canadian-produced series called Odyssey 5 and will start airing it this Friday. I've seen a few eps of this recently and what I've seen I like a lot, so I'm reccing it to y'all. I guess it was originally shown on Showtime which explains why I never saw it (no premium channels!) back then. You'll see a lot of familiar faces in it, including Peter Weller (Buckaroo Banzai, RoboCop), Christopher Gorham (Jake 2.0, Ugly Betty), and Kenneth Mitchell (Jericho). It was conceived by Manny Coto who has a long history in TV, including 24, Strange World and Enterprise. Anyway, if you have a free slot in your viewing schedule, you might wanna check it out. :)

I watch NBC pretty exclusively on Monday nights right now, at least in primetime. Chuck continues to amuse me. I loved the whole exchange between Ellie and Morgan about Chuck last night (which I don't think counts as spoilery so I am not tagging it):

Ellie: "Do you know what a gelding is?"
Morgan (indignantly): "Yes! It's one of those little guys from The Dark Crystal..."
