Y'know that very poppy song "Ula Ula" on the Target commercials? It's performed by an Argentinian group called Illya Kuryaki & the Valderramas. I am highly amused. ;D

Well, it seems 2007 wasn't a complete creative bust after all. [livejournal.com profile] sithdragn needed someone to pinch-hit for a missing writer in the [livejournal.com profile] muncle "Down the Chimney Affair" and I managed to come up with a short piece to [livejournal.com profile] frau_flora's prompts. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] aukestrel for the fast and fabulous beta!.

Title: A Trick of the Light

The first season of The Man from UNCLE is available for preorder on dvd, with a release date of 7/24/06. It's about damned time!!! DeepDiscountDVD has it for $29.99 w/free shipping if you choose the standard shipping option but you can upgrade if you're impatient and not broke or cheap. :-)

And now for something completely boring: Memes behind the cut, gakked from various folks )

I just finished a new Man from UNCLE story. Clocking in at around 44000 words, it's novel-length (sorry folks, I gather from recent meta that shorter is preferred, but as a fan of longer works, I tend to write that way, too.) It's NS/IK, and eventually NC-17 (though it took them forever to get there!).

The story is called Lost & Found and you can find it either at my site here: http://kellie.mrks.org/fic/mfu/lost&found.htm
or at the Chrome & Gunmetal Madhouse: http://www.chromeandgunmetal.com/chrome/archive/2/lostfound.html

Brief synopsis: Sometimes you find something you weren't looking for, and it turns out it was what you needed all along.

I don't often rec things, but this one really must be recced, even though it was just posted a few minutes ago. I got to read it in draft form as it was being written over the past year or so, and it's truly an amazing story.

The story is The Boys from Berlin Affair by [livejournal.com profile] cordwainer_s (aka Cord Smithee). It's a Man From UNCLE fic, about 160K (words not KB) and very much NC17. Here's the brief synop from Chromeandgunmetal.com:

"I don't want to wear his uniform and I don't want his damned astigmatism and I don't want his sadistic streak and I do not want his smile. And I don't want ageing Nazis looking at me like the fountain of immortality and their youthful indiscretions all rolled into one."

(In case you were wondering, it's episode related. The Gurius Affair.)

This story was originally started for [livejournal.com profile] muncle's Theme Challenge #28 - "Illya's first clue" though by the time I finally finished it quite a long time after the challenge ended, it could also apply to #21 "Middle age." I guess to some extent it also answers the question Sith raised on Muncle yesterday about the Return movie, too. :-)

According to Amazon.com, the 1983 MFU 'reunion' movie The Return of the Man from UNCLE is going to be released on DVD on 30th November, 2004. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00062J076/qid=1097221982/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-1702141-0419830?v=glance&s=dvd

Go pre-order. Yeah, I know the reunion movie was lame but if there's enough demand maybe it will tip the scale for DVDs of the actual series. :-)

I just figured I should post this here, too, since some folks aren't on [livejournal.com profile] muncle. I've uploaded two stories for a friend of mine with very limited internet access. Both NC-17 NS/IK. You can find them at:

http://www.chromeandgunmetal.com/chrome/archive/0/leather.html
and
http://www.chromeandgunmetal.com/chrome/archive/0/paperwork.html

I happen to think they both kick serious butt. ;)

Question: what ep is it where we see Napoleon call Illya "IK"? I was trying to remember, but they all kind of blur together-- I have a sense that it was a season-one ep and that the scene might have involved an elevator, but I can't remember for sure. I just know that I did see it, and it surprised me because before that I thought it was fanon. :)

Or maybe I should say Old Fandom, all things considered.

I have a new section on my website for Man From UNCLE fiction. Go to my main page here: http://kellie.mrks.org/ and click on the "Man From UNCLE" link in the fandom table.

The story is 288K and it's called "Safe Harbor." Pairing: Napoleon Solo/Illya Kuryakin. NC-17 of course. :-)

A big thank you is due my betas: [livejournal.com profile] ardent_muses,[livejournal.com profile] bluster, and [livejournal.com profile] shayheyred for being kind enough to help me with this monster.

eta: And a big thank you to Linda Cornett for all the tapes, zines, and encouragement!

As many of you know I work in academe-- though not as faculty. I'm a lowly peon (aka staff person). As I was walking down the hall earlier today, I could hear a professor in a classroom ask: "Who knows who Karl Marx was?" There was a loooong pause, and someone tentatively offers: "He was a sociologist... I think." The professor assures her that she is correct, and goes on to ask "And what was he best known for?" Dead silence. The professor prompts. "Anyone?" More silence. Finally, clearly annoyed, the professor answers her own question. "Marxism. He wrote the Communist Manifesto with Fredrick Engels."

I have to say it kind of boggled my mind that no one in the class knew that. I guess that proves I'm a child of the Cold War.

And speaking of the Cold War, as I was looking up the proper spelling of Engels' first name to do this post, I ran across a picture which made me double-take because it looked SO much like Illya in disguise in "The Project Strigas Affair" episode of Man From UNCLE. So tonight I played around in Photoshop and made this Separated at Birth pic to share with y'all so you could see why I double-took. :) I'm sure I'm not the first person to remark on this, but it amused me, all things considered. Wanna see? Go here: Read more... )

My friend Linda loaned me a book on the making of The Man From UNCLE, and I took it to work to read over my lunch hour. Anyway it was on my desk when a co-worker (male, not at all gay, and in his 40's) saw it, and actually GASPED, and ran around the desk to grab it and look at it, saying (I'm not kidding) "Be still my beating heart!"

Turns out he's a huge MFU fan. We reminisced fondly. I ended up sending him the Amazon link so he could go 'vote' for the DVD's.
