kelliem: dandelion (ephemeral)

Man, I haven't posted in forever- seems like I rarely have anything interesting to say! But I did have to acknowledge the passing of one of my very earliest crushes: Davy Jones, gone at 66. Far too young!

All the icons of my youth are disappearing! Wah!

Ardent and I were devastated to learn yesterday evening that Betty (Bluster on LJ) passed away earlier this week. We don't know details, but it was apparently natural causes. They are holding a memorial for her on Monday. If you would like a link to the obituary please email me at kelliedru at gmail.com and I will send it, I just didn't want to post it publicly.

If you would like to make a donation in her name, I think one of the Humane Societies near her would be the perfect place, as she always said she was "one of those crazy cat ladies."

Aurora Humane Society

Central City, NE 68826

(they don't have a webpage I could find)

or the Central Nebraska Humane Society.

I am going to miss her something awful.

ETA: my son ran across this quote earlier today- it seems very appropriate.

Death is but crossing the world, as friends do the seas; they live in one another still. For they must needs be present, that love and live in that which is omnipresent. In this divine glass, they see face to face; and their converse is free, as well as pure. This is the comfort of friends, that though they may be said to die, yet their friendship and society are, in the best sense, ever present, because immortal.

Or, was. Goodnight, Walter, we'll miss you. He was 'the news' for several generations, really. What a shame he didn't quite make it to the 40th anniversary of the lunar landing. I still remember how excited he sounded. It was the first time I ever heard him sound anything but calm and soothing.

Another icon of my youth is gone. Patrick McGoohan passed away. Even though he's done a million other things, I will always remember him as Number Six in The Prisoner.

ETA: Wow, two in one day! I just heard that Ricardo Montalban has also passed away. I shall have to scream a memorial "KHAAAAAAN!!!!!!" in his honor. :(

I just heard from [livejournal.com profile] bethbethbeth and [livejournal.com profile] aukestrel that [livejournal.com profile] sharonmarais has passed away suddenly from meningitis. I did not know her well, but she always had a kind word, and we both liked hockey, and I'm sad that I won't be seeing her comments any more.

Majel Barrett-Roddenberry passed away yesterday. She was only 76. I am bummed. I met her once, some friends and I did a group costume "Daughters of the Houses of Betazed"* for a con she was at some years back-- all variations on costumes that she'd worn as Lwaxana, and she was delighted and came up to us after the contest and chatted and insisted on getting photographs with us. She was lovely. I was glad to hear she was able to complete her work on the new Trek film (once more, she's the voice of the Enterprise) before she passed. She will be missed. ETA: Canada's National Post has an affectionate compilation of clips up.

Also passing yesterday, W. Mark Felt, aka Deep Throat, who was viewed as a traitor by some, but to me he was a hero. It seems oddly ironic that he passed just after Frost/Nixon was released.

I just heard from [livejournal.com profile] shiningmoon that George Carlin has died. This bums me out, man, to use an idiom from when I first heard his work. He's been one of my favorites forever. I still quote from his routine about cats all the time, even though it's been 30 years since I heard it.

RIP, George, we're gonna miss you.

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] shiningmoon suggests "...everyone should say "FUCK!" at 6pm eastern time in his honour." I think that would be a fitting tribute.

For the first time in about a decade we have a yule tree! Found a cute small balsam fir and brought it home and decorated it. We didn't have quite enough of the cool new blue LED lights we'd bought so we have one strand of old-fashioned multicolored fairy stars too. The tree looks a tad lopsided because of that. The cats are extremely intrigued but so far ::fingers crossed:: they have not attempted to climb it. It seems to have provoked one of the two into a fit of territoriality, though. After a prolonged tree-sniffing session, Riku growled and hissed at Sora (who wanted a sniff too), which he very rarely does-- though we've noticed that when we take them out for walks (they walk on-leash) he does it then, too, so maybe the tree reminds him of being outside? Who knows. Cats iz werid. ;D

I also baked yesterday. About 4 dozen Oatmeal Snowballs and about 6 dozen Kolacky (aka Thumb Cookies, aka Jam Thumbprints). I used 4 different fillings for the kolacky-- Rose's lime marmalade, blackberry fruit spread, some amaretto-apricot-orange marmalade leftover from making an Amaretto cake, and some of the concord grape and port conserve I made a few months ago. They each have their own unique flavor but I'm kinda partial to the grape/port ones, I think.

Mini-rant: after wearing nothing but round-toed shoes for several years I bought a pair of snowboots which happen to have pointy toes. After a day shopping and walking in them I remembered why I stopped buying pointy-toed shoes. They hurt! Feet are not pointed, shoes should not be either. Unfortunately they are my only snowboots so they're not getting ditched from my closet as they deserve. Instead I just have to remember not to wear them for extended periods of time.

Wow, am I boring or what?

And damn it... I just found out Dan Fogelberg died. I am bummed. I know a lot of people think his music was hokey but I loved it.

I've now heard it from several people so it must be true, but oh, it makes me so sad to think it. [livejournal.com profile] thamiris has passed away. She was such an amazing writer, and an even more amazing person with such gusto and guts and grace, and we are surely poorer for her absence. We'll miss you, hon.

(Tham's gorgeous In Principio was the first fiction I ever read by her, and it bears rereading now. I don't think any of you will be offended by this story but just in case, I will note that the pairing is Jehovah/Lucifer and it's definitely NC17.)

Molly Ivins passed away yesterday.
She was only 62 (it was breast cancer). She's long been one of my idols, and I will miss her wit and wisdom terribly.

Andreas Katsulas died. Lung cancer. He was only 59. He was an excellent actor, and my tied-with-Ivanova favorite character on Babylon 5. I am bummed. :-(

RIP Betty Friedan. I drink a toast in your honor, because things wouldn't be half as good as they are not if you hadn't been around. We've still got a long way to go, but damn, you made a difference, and you'll be missed.
