kelliem: old-skool TV (tv)
([personal profile] kelliem Jan. 7th, 2008 02:22 pm)
I had a nice, relaxing weekend. It was nice not to have a big holiday to prep for. :) I got my monthly pedicure, and did some leisurely chores around the house, and read a lot (currently re-reading MZB's "Darkover" series) and watched a whole bunch of amusingly bad television. Basically I parked myself in front of the TV with the SciFi Channel on and watched: Manticore (wow, Robert Beltran has not aged well...); Wraiths of Roanoke (one of Adrian Paul’s better post-Highlander efforts, which isn't saying much); Minotaur (mmm, half-nekkid Tony Todd!); Abominable (wherein the creature bore an eerie resemblance to the late Jack Elam); Sasquatch Mountain (Lance Henriksen saves the day from lame-ass bank-robbers and Sasquatch at the same time!); Beyond Loch Ness (probably the best SFCOM I've seen to date); and Eye of the Beast (James van der Beek vs. giant freshwater squid on the Canadian side of Lake Superior!). Boy howdy, I am B-movied out. ;D

And in the news, I think this fellow must have done the same thing. Either that, or Torchwood needs to put a leash on Myfanwy.

I keep wanting to reread Darkover at some point, as I know there are books that I sort of skimmed the first time through. I always find myself gravitating more towards the first two books I read (Bloody Sun and Forbidden Tower) or the Regis & Family arc, which means that I never do read the ones I've missed again.

Such good books, though! And who knows, now that the TV shows I watch are slowly fading away, maybe I'll actually sit down and re-read some more.

Yeah, the TV thing is part of why I'm reading more, I think. I need to go out and replace the books from the series that have gotten misplaced over the years. Also, I might pick up the "new" ones (that aren't written by MZB but still...).

OMG, I would have been clawing my EYES out at all of that bad tv movie-age! I salute you! ;)

How are the Darkover books holding up to rereading? I loved them as a teen (and blame them for my current slasher ways), but when I tried to reread one as a 30-something, I couldn't get through it. Don't remember which one I tried, though, so it might not have been representative.

*boggles at your B-movie-watching stamina*

Actually I am finding they hold up pretty well. Yes, they are dated in some ways, but I take that into account when reading. (The main thing I'm noticing is the tendency, despite MZB's feminist leanings, of the male characters to get a tad twee over the female ones.) The one thing that's bugging me a bit, though, is the craptastic editing. There are SO many typos, etc., it's just annoying. I wonder if they got corrected in later editions of if they just keep being perpetuated edition after edition?
