For the first time in about a decade we have a yule tree! Found a cute small balsam fir and brought it home and decorated it. We didn't have quite enough of the cool new blue LED lights we'd bought so we have one strand of old-fashioned multicolored fairy stars too. The tree looks a tad lopsided because of that. The cats are extremely intrigued but so far ::fingers crossed:: they have not attempted to climb it. It seems to have provoked one of the two into a fit of territoriality, though. After a prolonged tree-sniffing session, Riku growled and hissed at Sora (who wanted a sniff too), which he very rarely does-- though we've noticed that when we take them out for walks (they walk on-leash) he does it then, too, so maybe the tree reminds him of being outside? Who knows. Cats iz werid. ;D

I also baked yesterday. About 4 dozen Oatmeal Snowballs and about 6 dozen Kolacky (aka Thumb Cookies, aka Jam Thumbprints). I used 4 different fillings for the kolacky-- Rose's lime marmalade, blackberry fruit spread, some amaretto-apricot-orange marmalade leftover from making an Amaretto cake, and some of the concord grape and port conserve I made a few months ago. They each have their own unique flavor but I'm kinda partial to the grape/port ones, I think.

Mini-rant: after wearing nothing but round-toed shoes for several years I bought a pair of snowboots which happen to have pointy toes. After a day shopping and walking in them I remembered why I stopped buying pointy-toed shoes. They hurt! Feet are not pointed, shoes should not be either. Unfortunately they are my only snowboots so they're not getting ditched from my closet as they deserve. Instead I just have to remember not to wear them for extended periods of time.

The Year Meme:

January: Had a quiet new year's eve-- [livejournal.com profile] bluster couldn't come up this year because of family and pet issues, and [livejournal.com profile] ardent_muses didn't want to risk the awful streets, which I can't blame her for a bit, so it was just me, the kidunit, and the housemate.

February: It's frelling snowing. Again. This makes 8 storms in 7 weeks. I begin to understand why people go crazy in the winter.

March: Any classical music mavens on my flist?

April: Okay, this one was a new one on me.

May: Well, that was a weekend I don't want to repeat.

June: I am so lucky to live in an area that has really excellent food resources.

July: I never would've believed that a movie based on toys could be so much fun. :)

August: I stopped at the store for a few things on my way home tonight, and as I was perusing the red peppers to choose a likely one to take home, I saw this beauty: http://pics.livejournal.com/kelliem/pic/0005941t/

September:[livejournal.com profile] truepenny is still doing an episode by episode analysis of due South and I continue to be impressed by her understanding of the show.

October: Susan Cooper speaks out (a little) on the new movie "based" (and I use that word reluctantly) on her book, "The Dark is Rising."

November: This made my day: Huge fine for anti-gay US church - a church whose members cheered a soldier's death as "punishment" for US tolerance of homosexuality has been told to pay $10.9m (£5.2m) in damages.

December: I had the weirdest dream last night.

Wow, am I boring or what?

And damn it... I just found out Dan Fogelberg died. I am bummed. I know a lot of people think his music was hokey but I loved it.

Dan Fogelberg had a great voice and hokey or not, I loved his music, too.

As for pointy shoes, they should be banned!!! They're stupid, sort of like spiked heels. It's like the designers hate women or something.

I loved that his music told stories.

And yeah, I think a lot of designers *do* hate women. But that's another rant. The sad thing is, these boots are only marginally pointy, they're not 'Manolo Blahnik pointy' which always look like court-jester shoes to me.
