My friend Linda loaned me a book on the making of The Man From UNCLE, and I took it to work to read over my lunch hour. Anyway it was on my desk when a co-worker (male, not at all gay, and in his 40's) saw it, and actually GASPED, and ran around the desk to grab it and look at it, saying (I'm not kidding) "Be still my beating heart!"

Turns out he's a huge MFU fan. We reminisced fondly. I ended up sending him the Amazon link so he could go 'vote' for the DVD's.

Your co-worker sounds a heck of a lot like one of my ex-roommates. I don't suppose his initials are S.C.?

Well, you're half right. His first name does start with an S. But the last one starts with an M. :)

I met David McCallum in person once, when I was in high school. He was shorter than I was. My beating heart was definitely not still. I just looked him up on imdb, and he's my mother's age...

Yeah, he's 73. He's currently got a regular part on NCIS, playing a quirky forensic pathologist. You know, for a 73 year old he looks pretty darned good. :D

How tall are you anyway? He's supposedly 5'8".

And you got an LJ! Cool! Got to go friend you.

We *are* everywhere, at least among folks of a certain age. Whenever I present some paper on an MFU-related subject at an academic con, afterward, at least a half dozen folks come up to me, reminiscing about the series and their youths, and declaring whether they were a Solo or Kuryakin fan.

If there's snow on the roof, there's probably a soft spot in their heart for UNCLE.

It sure seems that way. I work in academe too-- as a staff person, not a professor-- and it's very amusing to think of my faculty having an MFU clatch after a paper presentation. :-)
