kelliem: icy lakefront sunrise (Default)

This morning I *finally* managed to get a shot of the male Flicker-- sort of. He's much shyer than the female and usually flies off the second he sees me, but this morning I managed to catch him just as he poked his head out of the nest. If you look closely you can see the red 'blusher' on his 'cheek.' (I enlarged it a bit so it's kind of pixellated, sorry.)

Also, since I'm picspamming, here's an absolutely gorgeous early morning view in the courtyard between Hellems and Education on the CU Boulder campus, looking north toward the Theatre building. (Please to pretend you don't notice the edge of my finger in the lower right corner of the pic.) There's a the bright pink flowering crabapple tree on the right, an orangey flowering quince beneath it and I'm aiming through the branches of a tree I can't identify but right now it has deep burgundy-red buds about to break into bloom, and it has orange berries in the fall. (It's not a bittersweet, though.) I have a pic of it in the fall showing the berries >here< if anyone wants to try to ID it for me.

Great pictures. The courtyard is lovely and the shy flicker very much like a flicker. *g*

Thank you! Mr. Flicker is quite a wuss. Mrs. Flicker will just sit there and stare at me menacingly when I get close, but Mr. Flicker flees in panic. ;D (PS: nice icon! I'm going to put out a hummingbird feeder later this year, for the first time.)

Thanks. I love hummingbirds. I put my feeder out last week, but so far I haven't seen the little hummers yet.

I am not sure what the 'season' is like where you are, but the folks at the wild bird stuff store told me I shouldn't expect to see them around here until late June.

I live in Kentucky and I usually see them at the end of April or early May, especially if it's warmer than usual.

GREAT pic of Mr Flicker. My zoom lens just isn't good enough, nor my stealth apparently. I do get moderately good pix of the Barred Owls hooting at each other here on my rocky hillside. :)

And what A BEAUTIFUL pic of the courtyard. (didn't even notice the pinkie :) you totally caught a perfectly balanced frame full of color and movement. brilliant composition! (it IS a challenge to effectively capture large flowering trees!)

Thank you! Barred owls would be very cool to see. I've only seen owls once or twice in my entire life. Believe it or not, both pix were taken with my cell phone. One of these days I need to steal my kidunit's iRiver and get some real shots.

Cell phone pix?!?!?! AMAZING! I don't have a cell phone with a camera but I'm pretty sure that I'd not be able to take a pic of the broad side of a barn. I really am amazed! Imagine what you'd be doing with a good lens!

Did you ever see any my owl pix? here's one of the juveniles checking out the chimes on my deck. I was so thrilled that I could hardly hold the camera steady.

Oh wow! What a cool pic! I went and looked at some of the others too. I love how you caught them in flight!

Glad you looked around! :) I'm afraid that I'm still experiencing a steep learning curve with my pix being so jumbled and out of order.

One of the pix is of the parental unit feeding the juvenile. It was SO awesome! There are a couple of others of the juvenile hanging out in my front meadow watching me. walking along the wood of the retaining wall. just so lovely with its longer legs and bigger eyes. sizing me up for a snack maybe? it really cracked me up when it was chasing the squirrels. on the ground. I was all like "dude" you can do your awesome raptor thing and swoop down on them! to no avail. maybe they were too big for baby!owl.

I haven't been able to get close enough to this year's brood. Theres a Great Horned Owl in the area and as they reign supreme over all the raptors in the area? I'm guessing everybody else is watching their pecking orders. but I hear them a lot!

Beautiful!

I still desperately want the crabapple blossoms. Or any other kind, really.

It's supposed to snow tonight.

*sigh*
