kelliem: icy lakefront sunrise (nim)
([personal profile] kelliem Jan. 8th, 2006 06:42 pm)
Thanks to the lovely and talented [livejournal.com profile] aukestrel who made some caps for me, I now have a Nim icon! Yay! And here it is:
Nim icon

Yeah, yeah, I know, all of 3 people on my flist have a clue what I'm yammering on about. :) To explain, Nim is a CGI critter from the NBC series, Surface. Which apparently almost no one else on LJ watches. But he's such a cute little fish-cat-lizard-thing! And he and Miles have a Special Bond. (Not THAT kind of special bond, geez. Get your minds outta the gutter.I know mine is usually there too, but underage slash bestiality isn't really my thing...)

In the series, he belongs to a mysterious new species of critter which mature to the size of a whale and have strange electromagnetic properties and are generally causing havoc in the ocean. Nim's just a baby one who's been hand-raised by a teenage boy (the 'Miles' mentioned above.)

Oh, and since I'm here anyway, a meme:

The Raven
RAVEN - Your daemon may be a member of the crow
family. You are intelligent, observant, and
gregarious. Just as a crow or raven picks shiny
objects out of the dirt, you pick up tidbits of
information or ideas and store them away. You
have a good sense of humour, but sometimes lose
patience with people who are antipathic to your
nature. You are swift to alert others when you
find the truth, and you have no tolerance for
those who would hide it.

Way cool homage to kidlit there, too. That so rocks.

And Miles -- *snicker* I cannot help but think of the poor pre-Iraq War naval officer who was gaming with his cohorts in the Persian gulf (as the insurgents), won, and turned up after the briefing wearing his 'WWMVD?' (what would Miles Vorkosigan do?) button badge.

The Navy, that fine, upstanding, learn-from-experience crea that they are --

Pitched the results.

Here's where I admit with much embarrassment that I have no idea what you mean? I vaguely know that MV is a character in a book by Lois McMaster Bujold, but I haven't read it so I don't understand the reference.

(a) you should: he's quite fun.

(b) Miles Vorkosigan is, as you said, a character from Lois Bujold. He finds rules.... Inconvenient.

Imagine Lord Peter. With Mycroft Holmes for a godfather (and possibly father; the Dowager isn't saying.) Add a liberal dose of Francis Crawford of Lymond. And the most seditious library available by mail order.

Now put him in space.

It is my pleasure to introduce you to Miles Vorkosigan.

Do have fun.

Sounds like fun. :-) Next time I am shopping for books I'll see if I can find him.

But it doesn't help me understand your comment? Explain please?

Ah: If one were to ask Miles Vorkosigan to play the insurgents in a naval battle game, one should expect him to throw the rule book out the window and play dirty.

Which is what the referenced officer did.

And won.

Rather than address this in their protocols for addressing insurgentist attacks, the Navy threw out the results of the exercise in which the insurgents won.
