Is there some kind of conspiracy lately? I swear to GOD every third fic I've read this week has gotten discrete mixed up with discreet and it is driving me absolutely BONKERS!!!

Please see my last rant on the subjects of spelling and homophones 'cause I don't feel like retyping it and it's only been 6 months since last time, for goodness sake!!!.

Thank you.

I saw the wrong "discrete" used in an weekend circular in the paper for a major company. So sad.

I saw 'principle' used on one of the University websites instead of 'principal.' And 'you're' instead of 'your' on another. On a university website!

It's just sad.

Usually I see it the other way -- principal for principle -- and it drives me... well, I was driven there long ago and have set up shop to welcome the newly driven, but you know what I mean.

You're right, it usually is the other way around, but this time it was referring to money. (Oh! I just realized I should have added capital and capitol!)

And yeah, at least there's good company here around the bend. :)

Argh!! That one drives me nuts too. People who should know better do it :/

I kind of noticed...
It's gotten so bad that I don't which is which anymore.
I've put the word on the banned list :)

A-freakin'-men - you said it, dude!

One of the more recent that I see cropping up: peak/peek - ugh

You know what's WORSE???

peak/peek/pique

Doesn't ANYBODY know that pique is a discrete word?

Eeee. Well, I confess to having learned the difference between discreet and discrete at an embarrassingly adult age (in my 20s, for Pete's sake), but fortunately, my deep embarrassment when I realized the gap in my education burned the proper spellings into my brain, and any subsequent errors were carelessness rather than ignorance.

"Lay" for "lie" still drives me up a wall, especially in the mouth of a character who would know better. If it's canonical (Ray K, John Sheppard), I'll buy it, but from Fraser or Rodney it just plain hurts.

I'm still having problems with lay and lie. I depend on the kindness of betas. :)

Take heart! (But not hart, unless it's hunting season. *g*) There is a wonderful little candy shop here with the unfortunate name "Sweet Adventure's in Fine Candy". I avoided it for years because of that apostrophe, but, dang it! They have REAL peanut butter fudge! Anyway, I mentioned a couple of months ago to the owner that their name was problematic. Since then I've noticed that they no longer have the apostrophe in it when they run ads in the newspaper and I *think* I saw a new sign go up on the little strip mall that doesn't have it.
(The big neon sign over the door still has it :( but I suppose that's pretty expensive to change.)
