I swore I was going to post about good stuff now and then, so here goes.

Last night I went to the last Boulder Philharmonic concert of the season with my mom. The program was wonderful, the first piece was the Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor by Saint-Saƫns, played by an amazing guest soloist, a 15 year old girl named Sharon Wu, winner of The Phil's 2005 Young Artists Concerto Competition. She really blew me away. So much talent!

They also gave us Bruch's Violin Concerto in G Minor, Op. 26 with another guest soloist, Brian Lewis. The final piece was The Phil on its own doing Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 in e Minor, Op. 64, which they performed beautifully. I was startled to realize that the second movement, the andante cantabile, forms the basis for Cole Porter's "I Love You", at least I am 99% sure it was the same melody. If it wasn't that piece it was some other Broadway musical I recently watched that used the same musical theme.

After the concert we stopped by the Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse where the Phil was having a little end-of-season party We shared a table with a very nice gentleman who set off my gaydar by opening the conversation by saying he felt that the Tchaikovsky piece was the one that showed that he had finally come to terms with his homosexuality. Not exactly the conversational gambit of a straight man, I think, though it did lead to an interesting and lively discussion of international politics and gay rights. :)

Today the kid-unit and I accomplished quite a bit of sewing toward some costumes for Anime Expo, so that was good. I also got a new memory-foam mattress pad and installed it on the bed, I'm looking forward to testing it out. As I was making the bed, Riku (our cat) kept trying to 'help' as is his wont. I asked the kid-unit to come get him so I could actually MAKE the bed, and she snuck into the room, crawling down below the level of the bed to get him. We both thought he had heard her, because his ears were swiveled back like he was listening to her, but when she suddenly popped up from behind the bed and went 'rowr!' loudly he leaped about two feet in the air and started running before his feet even hit the bed, managing to almost knock the phone off the nightstand in the process. We simultaneously felt badly for scaring him so badly, and laughed our asses off because it was so funny. :-D

Finally, I got James Baldwin as my Dead Celebrity Soulmate! How cool!
James Baldwin responds...
"Ah, a kindred spirit in the struggle for truth and beauty-- c'est magnifique! I would love to get to know you better."

What your date might be like...
Baldwin is a passionate man of ideas, so you can expect a long night of spirited conversation and debate. If you feel yourself struggling to keep up, ask him about his childhood in his step-father's Pentecostal storefront church in Harlem, or about his own short-lived career as a teenaged preacher. Baldwin's emotions about America are complex to say the least, after experiencing first hand the advances and setbacks of the civil rights movement over the last half-century, so if you get a chance to spend the evening with him in Paris, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the artist's enthusiasm and graciousness. Baldwin has the knowledge of an expatriate in love with his adopted city and he will probably skip right over the Champs Elysees and take you to the lesser-known, but more satisfying, bohemian establishments in the Latin Quarter and along the Left Bank.

My folks have one of those memory foam mattress pad thingys and they love it. You'll have to give us a report on how it works.

Poor Riku. No wonder he's so skittish. :-)

At least he didn't have someone sit on him...twice. Poor Griz likes to sleep in my computer chair and today I pretty much sat on him *twice.* Poor baby.

I shall do that. The cat apparently likes it. He hung out on it all afternoon. And we didn't mean to scare him, she really thought he knew she was there, and he likes to play-fight so we 'rowr' at him all the time. I nearly sat on him just last night though-- I was just going to sit down and he decided to try to steal the chair. I won, though. :)

If the cat likes it then I'm sure it's comfy. :-)

I didn't mean to suggest that you meant to scare him. It's simply that he's high strung to begin with and scares like that can make cats more-so. But even with that I was joking. He's a a fun boy and I know he likes play-fighting with both of you.

What a fun sounding weekend and it's not even Sunday!! :) And yes, I'll be watching with interest for a mattress report.

Glad to hear the concert was so nice - I didn't renew my season tickets this year. Too much kiddie stuff, and I was irritated that one (or was it two?) concert was scheduled for the Boulder Theater. It was pretty funny to get a survey from the Boulder Phil pointing out how much more diverse ("family-friendly") their programming was this year and why wasn't I re-upping?
