kelliem: annoyed kitty (wtf)

This latest Windows Update is driving me mad (yes, you Maccers may point and jeer now). It works fine on every work computer I've installed it on, but my little laptop at home which is my only home computer? Nope. I've tried twice now, and after I install it, I can't access email or the web, so I have to do a system restore to before I installed it. Then the little ! shield keeps nagging me to reinstall it. Grr. Now I am going to have to go fishing on the MS website to see if I can find a reference to the issue and what to do with it.

Wish me luck, I'm going in.

eta: looks like a Zone Alarm conflict: They've posted a fix:

Errrr. do you, by any chance, run ZoneAlarm? I saw an article today saying that ZA blocked Internet access after installing the latest MS upgrade...

Just my 2 cents (cdn) ;)

I didn't read the article itself since I don't use ZA, so I can't be more helpful :(

I do run ZA and had just run across a notice about that problem before I saw your response. Apparently ZA now has an update to fix the problem which I'll need to run before I do the Windows update. Hopefully that will fix the problem.

Keeping my extremities crossed for you :)

And I was just wondering today if I should go back to ZA... I'm running AVG but I read today that it causes performance problem (or something like that).

The joy of having computers ;)

Heck, I run AVG and Zone Alarm, and SpybotSD and AdAware. The last two aren't on auto, I just run them manually now and then to pick up whatever got missed by the first two. And yeah, my machine can be a bit slow but I pretty much never get spyware or viri.

[livejournal.com profile] stillnotbored had a similar-sounding problem yesterday that apparently had something to do with a conflict with a firewall. You might want to contact her and compare notes.

Yes, I think it is probably a Zone Alarm firewall conflict. I found some info about it in the Windows Update forums, plus [livejournal.com profile] mrlnpndrgn posted a response about it, too. I'll try again after I get home tonight.

I'm glad you found a fix for the issue. I've been putting off a call to MS support for weeks just because I don't want to be bothered, but I need to deal with it soon. :P

The damn OS think just because I accessed it via the virtual machine software I "changed" my computer. Bah, humbug.

After I got the problem with Zone Alarm fixed, somehow WinUpdate fried my wireless keyboard and mouse software so I had to reinstall that, too. I don't have the world's fastest machine so it took FOREVER what with all the reboots! I *think* everything's running okay now, though.

Good luck with your OS problem!!

Oh, and I got the playbill, etc! Cool stuff! PS is aging damned well.
