Elmer Bernstein, composer extraordinaire, died Wednesday at the age of 82. That's two of the most influential composers of my youth who've passed in the last month. He was responsible for the themes from The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape among many, many others.

Ahhh, Elmer. I'll forever associate him with the music from Airplane! Strange but true: when I moved to Santa Barbara, I wound up being assigned Elmer's old phone number. I fielded calls for him the entire five years I lived there. :( And for some reason, these people always thought I would have a forwarding number for him....

Small world, eh?

Though why on earth anyone would think you would know his new number when you were randomly assigned his old one boggles the mind.

Love the icon, btw. Pretty, pretty, pretty. Men in Tuxes. :)

I know! That was such a mystery to me. I explained the circumstances each time, but they were always confused, like I should have known the information or something. Given that these people were all filthy rich, they had probably never dealt with the phone company directly, and just had no clue how things work. :( *sigh*

Oh, that's a shame. I loved his stuff and was always amazed that he could do modern-sounding themes even though he had been around long enough to have done some of the classics.

Great name, too.
