There is this thing... it's called 'birth control.' You might want to read up on it.

(Apparently unplanned pregnancy was the plot device of choice this season... it came up in Fringe, Hawaii 5-0, Bones, House (two even!!) and The Event. And that's just the shows I was watching. There may be more I am not aware of.)

Don't forget Grey's Anatomy too.

I find the sheer STUPIDITY of it as a plot device immensely annoying.

It really is. Seriously, it gets my blood pressure up.

I haven't seen the particular instance you mention in the rant, but yes, all of that and more.

Yes, I'm often amazed how some amazingly smart characters are made stupid by writers who can't think of other plot devices. :(

Yes! These people are supposed to be intelligent, mature professionals. Yet they're making choices like teenagers.

Thank you, I despise this trope, especially in this day and age (Planned Parenthood-hating right wing nutjobs notwithstanding). I hate it as much as I do the latest on screen fetish of choice which is open vomiting that shows up in every freaking thing I watch! *grrrrrrrr*

But the worst pregnancy story line - the absolute WORST - was last night's House finale with that little troll Taub knocking up not one but TWO women at the same time. I think that show officially jumped the shark and ran its course in one fell swoop.

I know! I was just gobsmacked by the sheer ludicrousness of last night's House. I think it's off my viewing list for good at this point.

I know!!! I'm so fucking annoyed right now. I don't watch all the shows you listed, but I do watch some, like Bones, Justified, and H5O. In this day and age, there's really no excuse for it. These aren't supposed to be soap operas for god sakes.

I know the men are just as responsible, but I still can't help but think, women, protect yourself!!!! Have we learned so little and gone back in time? These aren't teenagers who are too stupid to know better. What kind of message is this sending? Not a good one.

Pitiful!!!!

Exactly! There is just no excuse for this to be happening! I hold both male and female characters to be equally responsible, if the woman's not protected, she needs to let the man know and he needs to glove up.

And that's the message that they should be sending, safe sex, not just fuck until you're preggers, like, OMG, how'd that happen?

Idiots!
