It's been decades since I did any costuming for myself, but I wanted something for this Halloween (not that I have anything fun to do, but I will be wearing it to work) which would also be good for other costume-appropriate events like attending midnight premieres of Harry Potter movies with the kidunit. :D I decided to be trendy and do a Steampunk-themed outfit. I'd been perusing eBay looking at various Steampunk items to accessorize with but they were mostly way out of my price range. So for the past few weeks I've been working on making my own. I bought a toy raygun and repainted it, and bought an inexpensive brown top-hat and have found lace and veiling and other goodies to make it more interesting. I'm pretty happy with the results and I want to share pix!

The gun (it has lights and makes sounds!):

With the holster I decorated for it:

(I used a cheap power-drill holster as a base.)

And now the hat! Front view:

Once I get the whole outfit put together, I'll see if I can get a pic to post. :)

Wow. You're brilliant. I'm feeling a little bit covetous. :-)

I'll put a pic up once I have all the pieces together. The kidunit is making the skirt for me (a classic walking skirt in burgundy taffeta) as a gift, and I have a burgundy-brown velvet jacket, and a foofy shirt, and I found some amazingly inexpensive corsets on ebay. I'll actually have two versions of the outfit- one that's worksafe (with a cotton shirt) and one that's less so (the shirt is mesh so it's transparent).

Fantastic! Great creativity! Can't wait to see it put together.

Thanks! I dunno how much actual creativity is involved in wrapping some lace and mesh around a hat or painting a toy gun, but I am pretty happy with them nonetheless! ;D

So cool! The transformation is amazing. Man, I wish you were here to help my daughter with her Halloween costume. :g:

I used to love making halloween gear for the kidunit. It's fun. I've always been a costumer at heart.

looks terrific so far, and it sounds like the entire ensemble will be awesome! steampunk is so fun - you did a great job on the ray gun

Those goggles look vaguely familiar; I think we shopped at the same place. :) Did you spray paint them? Just be careful, as it can chip on that sort of rubber.

I really like the aged ray gun -- and the holster is great. Steampunk can be a lot of fun to create. I'm going to have to get back into it soon.

They came painted, but it definitely looks like spray paint. Maybe I'll put a coat of sealer over them, just to be safe. The holster was work- I had to hand-sew the prettier fabric onto the heavy nylon canvas that it's made out of- that made my fingers very sore! But I love how it came out. The amusing thing-- that brocade fabric I used is the 'complimentary' g-string that came with my corset. It's not like I was ever going to actually WEAR it. ;D
