kelliem: tree & lawn (green)
([personal profile] kelliem May. 19th, 2009 10:23 pm)
A few pix from around my house.

A shot of the cottonwood snag in front of our house, with just the beak of the male flicker poking out of this year's cavity nest (in the rightmost trunk, near the top). Last year they used the trunk closest to the camera, and a squirrel got the eggs or babies. The killer squirrel still lives in the old nest cavity, but this year mom and pop are careful never to leave the new nest completely unattended.

Bad cell-pic of our local fox, taken through a window screen. The fox is checking out the birdseed on the porch to see if it's any good to eat. S/he is in summer coat now, much less fluffy.

One of the apple trees in the yard, blooming like mad. :)

I wish we had flickers in our area -- they seem like very interesting birds. Keep us up to date on the state of the flicker family if you can?

Cool pic of the fox.

The apple tree is gorgeous! Was that pic taken with your cell also?

You may well have flickers in your area, their habitat is pretty much the whole of North America. http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Northern_Flicker/id Just keep your eyes open. They're cavity nesters and prefer to peck their cavities in old dead trees. Ours are the red-shafted variety, yours may be yellow-shafted. They don't come to regular feeders very often, but they like suet feeders.

And yes, all my pix are cell-pix, as I have no real camera.
