Stupid iPod questions...

So I have this nifty iPod that was given me for Christmas, and I've figured out how to do some things on it, but not others. For instance, how the heck does one delete songs off of it? I had a bunch of duplicates of some songs on my hard drive that were transferred to the iPod, and I'd like to get rid of them. I read the manual pdf document and it said all I have to do is open iTunes and click on my iPod and I should be able to tell it to delete a song, but no such luck. In fact, I can't seem to select anything in the iPod library, not even to just select a different sort. Though if I switch over to the iTunes library on my laptop I can delete, sort, etc. I assume I should be able to do that on the iPod itself, but I can't figure out how to tell it to let me do so.

Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?
