Ganked from [livejournal.com profile] tigs. The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books.

1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicize those you intend to read.
3) Underline the books you LOVE.

There must be some folks who haven't read any, since I've read 40. (That's not counting the two which are redundant. Though really, I think that series titles should be listed individually, not lumped together.) ;)

My question is, who defined these "top 100" books? ;-) I saw a list last year about this time that purported to have come from a British librarians' association, which started with To Kill a Mockingbird and the Bible, but investigating at [livejournal.com profile] tigs's LJ got me nowhere, alas.

I have no idea. The original post I saw mentioned something called "The Big Read" which has a website here: http://www.neabigread.org/, so I suspect the list originated in some of their materials. I did a quick search and can't match it up with any of the 'big' lists though. The ALA has a list here: http://www.randomhouse.com/modernlibrary/100bestnovels.html but it's not the same list. It's also not Waterstones' or Time, or the NYT, or even Bookman

eta: [livejournal.com profile] aukestrel figured it out! It's the BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/bigread/top100.shtml

Wait, no. It's not the same list. It's close, but not quite.

Ah ha! A reader-ranked list, as opposed to a "official most important reads" sort of list, which I always take issue with. *g* Thanks for the link!

I agree that the series books should be listed individually, which is why I don't consider the two entries redundant. I have read Hamlet and several other plays and sonnets, but I'm pretty sure I have not read the "Complete" works of Shakespeare.

I've read less than 40 from this list.

There are two books missing from your list. I only noticed when I looked at other people's lists, mostly because "Life of Pi" is on my want to read list.

44 A prayer for Owen Meaney - John Irving
51 Life of Pi - Yann Martel

That's quite odd! The list I copied it from must have been missing them too, as I did not delete any on purpose! I'll add those in.
