Finally got to take a little time off work-- not much just a day and a half, but it helped. Spent the first half day cleaning the house which needed it. Second day, spent half of it running errands and putting some clothes in storage and then
bluster arrived and we drove down to
ardent_muses house and from there went to dinner and a Great Big Sea concert. Wouldn't it figure that it was SNOWING while we stood in line outside waiting for the doors to open, but the next day was sunny and 60 degrees?? Love Colorado in the Springtime. There was much fun, both mundane and fannish, had by all, but I'll cut-tag the fannish squeeing so those of you not interested don't have to look.
Great Big Sea opened the Western half of their current US tour in Colorado and we went to see them at The Gothic. Carbon Leaf opened for them and they were excellent, though the crowd was incredibly rude and talked through most of their set. You know, people, if I wanted to listen to you talk, I wouldn't have paid to see a band. Grrr. The crowd increased by at least 50% once GBS started their set, and they were, as always, AMAZING. I have never been disappointed in a GBS concert. Ever. These guys have enough energy for about 20 bands. Alan and Sean were in fine voice, and Bob... my GOD. Bob smiled. Bob looked relaxed. I have NEVER seen Bob look relaxed during a concert before. Wow. They've retained their drummer, Kris MacFarlane, from their last tour, and added a new member, Murray Foster, who very competently supplies the bass vocals and bass guitar work formerly done by Darrell Power. They did a perfectly mixed set of old crowd favorites like General Taylor, Up, Consequence Free, and Old Black Rum, with about half of their latest release, which I had not heard much of before, including a hysterically funny ode to hockey players called Helmethead.
The kitchen-party aspect was in full swing during most of the older songs, since everyone knew them, but on the newer songs, again, I have to bitch about the wretched crowd behavior. Since when is it okay to yak at the top of your freakin' lungs through a concert? Especially through one of Sean's softer, romantic ballads. I could hardly hear him over the wankers next to us. They did two encores, finishing up with Rant and Roar, (and a theater-full of Coloradoans singing about how "we'll rant and we'll roar like true Newfoundlanders" is really quite amusing. :))
Afterward we did a post-concert wind-down at the Village Inn where our red-headed, toungepierced waitress told us she couldn't wait until the Jimmy Buffett concert because she has a new Hawaiian shirt and a stuffed parrot. She was adorable. :-) Then we went and crashed at
ardent_muses house. Next morning we woke up way too early ate the wonderful french toast and bacon supplied by our hostess, and then spent the rest of the day alternately watching Man from UNCLE tapes (FINALLY got to see The Children's Day Affair"! Also rewatched Foreign Legion: Illya in underwear. Illya in cut-offs. Upside-down Illya with Treasure Trail! EEE!) and watching hockey. The Avs managed to pull a win off by the skin of Joe Sakic's teeth. Go Mighty Joe! Who needs Fuckberg? (and on the SJ side, Cheech had an assist with a flawless pass!).
ardent_muses had family stuff to do the next day and needed her beauty sleep so
bluster and I drove back up to Boulder in the early evening, and then watched the first adventure of Sapphire and Steel, which despite the slow episodic pacing and cheesy sfx is surprisingly watchable. And (fannish squee!) David's hair looks like polished bronze in it. Gaaah. Gorgeous. This morning we got up and watched the entire second adventure (I had only borrowed the two from Linda), which was even better than the first. It was actually fairly riveting and had a very unexpected ending. I must say I love Steel's autocratic and no-nonsense manner, and the contrast with Sapphire's warmth and gentleness. But there's a true affection between the two, too. Really well-done characters. I liked this series so much I got online and went and found the DVD's at deepdiscountdvd.com and ordered a set.
Unfortunately then
bluster had to leave to drive home, and so endeth my adventures for the weekend. Now i have to psych myself up for work next week, which includes our departmental Commencement ceremony. Gaaaaah.
ETA: And thanks to
bluster for the bottles of Elderflower Presse' which I have not been able to find locally in quite a while. I am THRILLED to have them! I'm going to open one to have with dinner. Mmmmmm. Why oh why isn't this stuff more widely available??
