So there I was watching Top Chef last night (not sorry to see THAT contestant go!) and see a commercial saying that there's going to be a special sneak preview of Tim Gunn's Guide to Style on afterward. I figured it'd be 5 minutes, but it was actually an entire episode!

I liked it. It was cool. Tim is such a neat guy, and he really seems to care about people. Overall I thought it was quite a lot gentler than the usual makeover show, and more informative. He actually sat down with the woman and showed her on a computer program why certain styles work for her body type and why others don't. I need that program. They even took her underwear and bra shopping, with a professional bra-fitter to help. Man, that would be wonderful! The hair-stylist took her preferences into account, too, leaving her hair longish, but changing the look completely. They also had a life coach to help her identify why she has so much trouble dressing appropriately for her age. (She was a 41-year-old salon owner who dressed like a biker chick.) The supermodel type (Veronica? Victoria? Something like that) who is the co-host wasn't as nice as Tim but she was okay.

I'm definitely going to watch the ep tonight, too. Not just because they're introducing this season's Project Runway designers, either. :)

We also watched it (yes, Wolfie too!) after Top Chef last night and I liked it because of his methodology. Your style, my way. He doesn't try to change totally how you look to make you look like he thinks you should. And I thought the final "gift" to her was absolutely adorable of them.

Speaking of TC, were you as relieved as I was that Howie finally went home? Gah. I've been calling him "Mr. Pork" in my head because he did pork for every challenge he possibly could. I was shocked two weeks ago when they sent Tre home, though. I really thought Tre would be a finalist.

It's clear that the gifts in the show are supplied by sponsors but they really did choose appropriate ones for her personality. Or, wait... did you mean the matching mother/daughter dresses? That was definitely adorable.

No, I meant giving her back the dress she wore when she was 20 in a sourvenir box. I thought that was nice of them.

See, I watched it, and much as I like Tim Gunn, I was bored to tears. He's much too low key IMO to handle an entire show himself; he's a delightful "side character" to Project Runway, but carrying a show? Not so much. Hopefully he'll become more dynamic. I'll watch it again, but I was very disappointed last night, not even mentioning how much I wanted to slap the woman they made over.

She was really resistant to change, wasn't she? Gah.

I completely disagree about Tim, though, so we'll have to agree to disagree. (Not the first time ::koff Ray/Ray koff::)

I was talking to [livejournal.com profile] sithdragn about the show in email and she said "Tim's show reminds me of Alton Brown's 'Good Eats' show -- he doesn't tell only how to do things, but *why*. Watching an episode of Alton or Tim's shows can educate in a general sense rather than a specific recipe/person. I really, really liked that."

I agreed with her 100% It was so nice to watch a makeover show where they really explain what they're doing. In the one last night, they even sent the woman home with a makeup chart to help her remember how to do the makeup. That was great! (And she was much less irritating than the first woman.) Next week looks like their makeover candidate is a woman of size, which I am really looking forward to. I want to see what suggestions they make for those who don't fit standard sizes.

Oh, that sounds like fun. Except I'm sure that it'll only come out here on cable, and we don't get cable TV. Maybe in a few years time they'll show it on free to air, and I can watch it then. :)

It is on cable, unfortunately. It's on Bravo. Maybe it will show up on one of the online sites where you can watch whole eps.
