kelliem: old-skool TV (tv)

Watched the first ep of Blood Ties last night. Now, granted, it's been about a decade since I read any Tanya Huff (reminder to self, dig out the books and re-read them) but over all I was very impressed with it. I like the casting a lot, and I thought they did a great job translating book to screen. Christina Cox (Vicky) is beautiful without being plastic, and she's got enough age on her to feel realistic in the role. Kyle Schmid (Henry) is prettier than she is and managed to convince me he was much older than he looks. Also, I have to say that Dylan Neal (who plays Mike Celluci) reminds me strangely of Paul Gross though he doesn't really look like him. And I think the crew was in heaven, getting to film Toronto as Toronto for once. They seemed to be having a field-day focusing on street signs, buildings (The CN Tower anyone?), flags and other things that identify it as Toronto and not, say, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, etc. :-D

The one thing I could do without is Yet Another Wacky Forensic Pathologist... I swear there's an epidemic of them on TV right now.

I hate to say this, 'cause I actually like The Dreseden Files, but right out of the gate Blood Ties looks like it's got TDF beat, hands down, for snagging the viewer's interest. At least this viewer.
