Man, I'm such a fluffy vanilla happily-ever-after girl too. It's a hard balance - some fics I just can't enjoy, no matter how well done - but on balance, I agree that this one is worth the pain - it's so well done. And I want to believe, as you say, that it's not set in stone, that there's still hope. In fact, the author indicated that there she may write more in this universe, which suggests the possibility of future togetherness ...

But it's clear to me why I gravitate to fandoms in which happily-ever-after is virtually canonical - the stress of wondering is just too much!

However, I definitely intend to follow this author - she's really talented (though no talent is sufficient to cause me to venture into het! *g*)
