kelliem: aurora borealis (skylight)

I don't usually rec things... in fact I kind of abhor recs because they always seem to lead to hurt feelings (i.e., why didn't that bitch rec MY stuff??), but I'm going to rec something anyway. It's not in my usual fandom, and I stumbled across it accidentally the other night through a crack-van rec for a different story by the same author. I think this has got to be one of the best slash stories I have ever read in any fandom. It's Pirates of the Caribbean, Jack Sparrow/Norrington (which is the only pairing I actually 'read' when watching the film).

It's actually a series of 4 linked stories "Full Moon," "Tides," "Drowning," and "Currents," by [livejournal.com profile] firesignwriter. Her men are men, complicated men who have deep emotions, who hide those emotions from themselves and each other, and only gradually reveal them, but never in the light of day. The story is layered, the writing is crisp, literate, and nuanced, and the story is profound and moving. The point of view is consistent, praise the Lady! Oh, and, uh... it's hot. Very very hot. Did I mention that it's hot? :-)

Anyway, go read.

6:00 pm ETA: lovely Theban Band Sparrow/Norrington pics here. Probably oughtn't open these at work or in front of easily embarrassed elderly relatives, some are NSFW.

Ooh! *bookmarks* I shall read this as soon as I get home from work. Jack/Norrington is one of my favorite pairings.

Is work over yet? *bounce*

I hope you like it as much as I did. :-)

As for work, work is never over. It's like laundry. :-P

Bitch! Why don't you ever rec MY stuff?

*G*

I promise to have a look at this. I haven't heard you so enthusiastic about anything in a while. :) I guess maybe I'd better see the movie first, eh? With my seeing-eye friend explaining the plot? *G*

Yes, yes! Come over tomorrow and we will watch the movie with Kellie Captioning. :) Though I think you won't have much trouble with the plot. We are talking about a movie based on a theme park ride, after all. ;-D

Per your instructions, I went and read. I went and stayed up way too late and read, and then got up early and just finished reading. Wow, wow, wow. It blew me away; I'm just beyond words. How very, very wonderful, how moving, how hot - all those things you said. But a double-edged sword, I must say, because so very sad, too ... one of those rare fics that actually made me tear up. I want to read it again, but at the same time, I can't bear to read it again.

Remarkable story; I'm so very glad you rec'ed it!!

Yes, it is. Heartbreaking. I'm a fluffy vanilla girl and I like happy endings, but this one is worth the pain. Plus, you know, there is still hope. Life isn't set in stone.

Man, I'm such a fluffy vanilla happily-ever-after girl too. It's a hard balance - some fics I just can't enjoy, no matter how well done - but on balance, I agree that this one is worth the pain - it's so well done. And I want to believe, as you say, that it's not set in stone, that there's still hope. In fact, the author indicated that there she may write more in this universe, which suggests the possibility of future togetherness ...

But it's clear to me why I gravitate to fandoms in which happily-ever-after is virtually canonical - the stress of wondering is just too much!

However, I definitely intend to follow this author - she's really talented (though no talent is sufficient to cause me to venture into het! *g*)

Oooh - wow! Love the pic. :)

And thanks for the rec! I'll check it out when I get home.

Wow! I haven't gotten as far as the story yet, but daggone--The Theban Band does amazing work. Photomanips often don't click with me; it must be very hard to get all the details--proportion, lighting, etc.--just right. This stuff is wonderful. Thanks for pointing me in their direction.
