RIP Steve Irwin.

What a strange way to go. Fitting, I guess.

I guess I'm not surprised. At times, he didn't look like he was too careful or respectful with the animals/critters he was handling.

Yeah, he always looked a tad too casual in his handling of dangerous creatures.

Darn it, now I won't be able to use my "Steve: Australian for Stupid" joke any more. ;-P

At least he went out doing what he loved. That's more than a lot of people get.

I was a little shocked that it finally happened, but not that it actually did happen. I always figured one of those animals would take him out one day. He just never seemed as careful or respectful as he should be.

I feel sorry for his family. Still, he did go out doing what he loved. Being stabbed in the heart by a stingray. Man, that's got to be a one in a million way to die. Only Steve.

Particularly because stingray venom isn't deadly in and of itself, so Death By Stingray would rarely be fatal at all except that one tends to be stung in the water AND it's painful enough to make one pass out.

Being speared in the heart by one? That's just literally one in millions, surely.

Exactly, getting stung in the heart by a stingray that is a one in a million shot. I mean you have a rib cage to protect your heart from puncture wounds. So it's hard to get to first of all. I don't know a lot about stingray's but I don't think the venom is all that deadly either, just very nasty feeling when you get stung.

I was never a big fan of Steve's, but it still sucks. What a way to go. He just wouldn't go out in a normal way. A guy like him.

It's always surprising to hear about something like that, and I feel for his family, but I usually couldn't stand to watch anything to do with him. It was good of him to oppose wildlife hunting as he did, but just leave the poor animals alone. :-P

Yeah, it's his family I feel for. His kids especially.

You Know,

I always suspected he would go in some spectacularly stupid way---but my money was on either a snake or croc.

whoa... really a unique way to go (sympathies to his family) but he did get to go out doing what he seemed to love...

My oldest son was stung by a ray... in the arm... I guess I'd never realized that they could be so deadly... yikes.

Normally they're not at all aggressive, not that poisonous, and they only sting when startled or frightened, I think it was just a fluke that this one stung him in a spot where the barb could penetrate his heart. I don't think it was the toxin that killed him, so much as the hole in his heart.
