I have a couple of questions for any of you who are PC technogeeks. I've been trying to install the latest update of Microsoft .NET Framework and the install keeps failing. It doesn't, however, tell me why it fails. I suspect it's because this is an older laptop and even though I upgraded the memory a year or so back, it may still not have enough, with everything else that's on it, so I've been trying to make more room, but it's difficult since I have already removed pretty much every non-essential program I never use, and am down to all the weird stuff that I don't know if it's safe to remove or not. Like, there are 5 different versions of Java showing in my Add/Remove Programs application:
Java 2 Runtime Environment SE v 1.4.1_02
Java 2 Runtime Environment SE v 1.4.2_03
Jave Web Start
Java 6 Update 7
Java 6 Update 11
And there are two copies of Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable.

Do I need to keep all those verisions of Java or can I delete some? What about one of the copies of C++ ? If I can delete one, how do I know WHICH one to delete? Help! (Oh, and in case it makes a difference, I'm running Windows XP Home Edition v. 2002 SP 3 on a Dell Inspiron 1000 with a Celeron 2.20 GHz processor and 440 MB of RAM. Yes, I know it's old and slow and underpowered but I can't afford a new one!)
