My mom got her blood tests back, and apparently most of the problem was hyponatremia, aka low blood sodium. She's been on a low sodium diet for years, just because she 'thought she ought to because salt is bad for you' without ever asking her doc about it. When he changed her thyroid meds recently (lowered the dosage), it apparently triggered the recent event. I guess the combination of low thyroid and hyponatremia give pretty much the exact symptoms she had. He told her to go back to eating a normal amount of salt and they'll monitor her sodium and thyroid levels to make sure this doesn't happen again.
She was actually pretty happy with that prescription, since she loves salty snacks and had mostly given them up.
