Today is the first day in a long, long time that I've felt hopeful about the direction the US is moving, and haven't felt ashamed of my country. There's still a long row to hoe ahead and so much to fix that it boggles the mind, but we're moving forward instead of backward, finally. Thanks to everyone who made this day possible.
For anyone who's interested, there's an eloquent essay by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., putting Obama's victory in historical context: http://www.theroot.com/id/48731
There was less-good news on other fronts, particularly gay rights, but I wanted to take a moment to be happy before I got into the frustration.
And for those who might not be so happy about the outcome of the presidential race today (including some close relatives of mine, unfortunately) I have a little quote for you:
"We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave, to every living heart and hearth-stone, all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature."
