kelliem: Riku-kitty w/ laser eyes (sleepy)
( May. 22nd, 2008 07:56 pm)
I took a week off from work since I was in 'use it or lose it' territory. I've been having a good time doing absolutely nothing other than read mystery novels, watch makeover shows (and various season finales) and attend a couple of movies. Oh, and I made a paella, my first attempt (chicken, sausage and green bean). Next time I will know to watch it like a hawk when it's close to being done because the difference between 'crusty' and 'charred' on the bottom is about 60 seconds. It was still good, but would have been better for being off the heat a minute sooner.

Kham and I saw Prince Caspian last weekend, and we saw the new Indy movie today. We enjoyed both of them very much. (Though I'll admit that I liked Iron Man better than either of them.) I will say that Harrison Ford's still got it. :-)

My big adventure of the week: night before last there was a raccoon out on the back porch. I had the sliding screen door closed but the glass door open. Riku (see icon) our rather small indoor-but-would-rather-be-outdoor cat was sitting by the screen watching the raccoon, who was eating seeds dropped by birds at our feeder. When the raccoon moved too close to the door, scrawny little Riku somehow managed to push the screen door off it's track and go after the raccoon. Argh! I leaped up and followed, fortunately the 'coon decided to run and not fight. Then Mr. Predictable ran up a tree (he does that every time we take him out on his leash), and he can never get down by himself so I was able to grab him and drag him back inside. Annoyingly, I can't get the door back on its track properly. Gah. But still, we were really lucky. And even luckier that it didn't happen last night when the critter du jour eating dropped seed was a skunk instead of a raccoon. ;D

Let's see, what else... um... oh, I had to re-up for my health insurance and the new provider our HR folks picked out is saving me about $160 a month up front. Of course that will probably get eaten up by the 'imputed income' of having a non-dependent child on the plan but oh well. (Annoyingly, no one at HR could actually tell me precisely how said imputed income will actually affect me come tax time so I just had to close my eyes and pray while signing up.)

Another thing I have to be thankful for: today the tornado missed our area. Whew.
