It's Monday again, already???
I hate it when my weekend disappears. Saturday I ran a ton of errands, did laundry, and then went to the Phil with Mom. It was a pretty uneven concert. The first two pieces were good-- the 16 year old Young Artists Competition winner played Grieg's Piano Concerto very well, and that was followed by one of Dvorak's Slavonic Dances which was fun but really short. Then they they shifted to a contemporary Australian composer, Sculthorpe, which included a guest didgeridu artist, William Barton. The didgeridu part was very cool but the Schulthorpe piece on the whole was dissonant and IMHO vastly unpleasant. Yes, I know, I'm plebian. After that was over, Mr. Barton did an encore solo piece on the didgeridu which we liked much better.
They finished up the evening with Shostakovich's 1905 Symphony. I've never really liked Shostakovich (again with the dissonant! Yes, I know it's hard, so it's a good way to show off, but it's also ugly.) and this was no exception. For me, listening to Shostakovich is sort of like watching an historical drama directed by Fellini and filmed in a language you don't understand. You can pick out elements but you can't really figure out the story. "Oh, there's a huge battle!" "Hmm, that sounds like a horseback ride!" "Oh, there's a funeral!" "Whoops, another huge battle!" Gah. We thought it would never end.
On Sunday Kidunit and I went to Mile-Hi Flea Market which is huuuuuge. We walked the entire thing and I am sore and sunburned today. (It says something about my lifestyle that the only sunscreen in the house was 4 years out of date.) We got what we went for though (black BDU pants for KU-- Boy have they gone up from the days I used to buy them for $5 a pair. They're now $25. I guess that's what happens when you actually have a war on. ) I bought a new pair of sunglasses and some huge, perfectly ripe avocadoes for amazingly cheap. I also bought a vast amount of rhubarb and chopped it up and froze it so I can make straw-barb pies out of season.
