kelliem: Star Fleet insignia (trek)
([personal profile] kelliem May. 10th, 2009 03:51 pm)
I couldn't stand waiting, so I caved and went to see the new Trek movie. And like everyone else I've read who's seen it, I loved it. And that's speaking as someone who watched the original series in its original run, and even wrote a letter for the original "Save Star Trek" letter writing campaign. Spock was my second crush (Illya my first) and Trek has been an integral part of my fannish life for decades. I think Abrams et al. hit this ball out of the park. I really only have one and a half quibbles with the movie at all. (Yes, quibbles, not tribbles!)

My only complaint(s) are sort of interrelated. I was disappointed that the only real roles for women in the film were for Mothers and Girlfriends. I was also uncomfortable with the Spock/Uhura scenes, partly for that reason (by making her Spock's girlfriend, you negate some of her primacy as an individual character who needs no additional reason to be there), and partly because it's so well established in TOS canon that Vulcans don't really have a public sex life outside of Ponn Farr. However, I can kind of handwave that a bit since this is a canonical AU and as such, Spock may have embraced his human side more fully than his OU counterpart did. Oh, and did anyone else thing Nero's ship looked a bit like a B5 Shadow Ship?

Aside from that, I thought it rocked and I can't wait to see it again, maybe in IMAX if it's still playing in that format next weekend. Kham loved it too. I'd read some predictions that only Trek fans would go see it, but the sold-out 5pm Friday showing we attended had people of all ages and definitely not all of them were Trekkies/Trekkers of any variety.

Nero's ship looked like a Vorlon ship and a Shadow ship mated and had really ugly babies.

Heck, I went to the 10:00 AM showing (yes I'm cheap) and there was a frickin line for tickets. That never happens.

Agree with your criticisms. And I had some quibbles with the plot, but as you say, mostly quibbles. A very solid effort.

Thought it was delightful, on the whole. I was very pleasantly surprised!

I'm glad you got to see it! If you and Kham have an opportunity to see it in IMAX, I highly recommend it.

I was disappointed that the only real roles for women in the film were for Mothers and Girlfriends.

*nod* After chatting with another fan today, it was brought to my attention that the elevator may be the first time Uhura was forward or physical with Spock. She's hesitant and he seems a bit surprised in the scene.

My other complaint was that there was almost no racial mix beyond the crew itself; all the panning scenes at Starfleet showed a bunch of white kids. I found that so disappointing for Gene's vision.

I wish it was going to be in IMAX longer, I can't believe it'll only be out for two weeks in that format!

Hmmm... I'll have to watch for that hesitancy and surprise when I see it again, see if I agree.

I seem to recall that there was some diversity, but not as much as I would've liked to see.

(Also, LOL at your icon!)

yes. What you said.

I posted something similar on the MFU discussion list and got smacked around.

Really? Why?? Did people really not see it?

I thought it was good too! I haven't been able to watch Star Trek in a long time, because I thought Paramount kinda messed up the franchise. JJ Abrams has made me want to see more.

Yeah, I haven't watched since Voyager, they just made it so BORING! But this was definitely a great reboot.

Definitely see it in that format if you can - looks spectacular! Though it may not be there long - I know our local theater has only upgraded one or two screens to IMAX, and so the new films only usually last a couple weeks there before the next big IMAX picture comes in (I'm guess the new Terminator movie that comes out in a couple weeks will take over those screens then).

Yeah, I checked and it will only be in IMAX through Thursday the 14th! Wah! But Terminator doesn't start until the 21st, so they could still have a week more. I don't understand that.

Yes. This. Along with Sith's comment about overall lack of racial diversity.

Otherwise I liked it quite a bit, and look forward to seeing it again.

::averting my eyes so I don't see the spoilers::

The only reason I didn't break down and go see it this weekend was due to not feeling well. Otherwise I would have broken down. At least I know when I do see it I'll be with fellow fans.
