Windows question

Sometime in the last few Windows Updates, I seem to have lost the ability to browse my "My Music" folder by the date the songs were added (aka modified) to my computer. I was griping about it to the kidunit, who confirmed it's not just me. This is really annoying, and I know I used to be able to do it by doing Windows Explorer -> Folder -> Detail View -> Date Modified, and now I can't. I can browse all my other folders by date-file-added/modified, but not the "My Music" folder. Does anyone know a way around this new 'feature'?

OMG, that is one of my biggest pet peeves about XP. What you have to do is fiddle around with the Folder Options. It should be under Tools in your File Menu. Right now it's treating yout folder as a special type, you have to reset it to the regular version.

It's actually in 'view'. Sageness had the answer.

Interesting icon. It's weird how much Rodney/DH looks like Paul Gross in that shot.

Cool, I didn't know that. That'll save me some frustration.

Mine still contains "date modified" -- if you right-click on the header of the folder, I think you should get a list of possible folder "divisions," with checkmarks next to those that are currently displayed. It should include both "Date created" and "date modified" options. If it's not available, I haven't a clue.

You were close, you had to choose the 'view' menu and then 'choose details.' :-)

[identity profile] elynross.livejournal.com 2006-02-19 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's another way, but you can also just right click on the details bar at the top of any folder to modify that folder, although maybe you have to be the Windows classic folders view. That's one of the first things I do, in Tools-->Folder Options, General Tab, because the alternative makes me nuts, and then I set all folders to view the same as whatever one I'm in (under the View tab).

Yeah, that USED to work before one of the recent updates, and then it stopped working all of the sudden and I had to go into View.

[identity profile] elynross.livejournal.com 2006-02-19 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, that's just weird, because my Windows is entirely up-to-date, and it hasn't stopped working for me, either at home or at work... Bah!

[identity profile] kelliem.livejournal.com 2006-02-19 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm, maybe it *is* a difference between using classic folders and not, then. Though have you checked to see if it still works on your Music folder? All my other folders worked the old way, it was just my "My Music" one that didn't.

[identity profile] elynross.livejournal.com 2006-02-19 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's the one I used to check how you did it on, since that's the one you specified. *pokes about* But my modified date never disappeared from my music folder, that I remember. Or it did, and I was annoyed, and put it back long enough ago that I don't remember it, anymore. *g*

No, that doesn't look like that's it, since the other option is just to show common tasks in a sidebar, and that doesn't impact the details view. It is only possible in details view, though; the other options (tiles, thumbnails, icons, list) don't include the headers at all.

I'm just glad you figured out how to fix it!

I'm glad you asked this question, because it's been driving me absolutely nuts on my computer. *wanders off to poke at folder again*

Sageness had the answer here

Thanks! *fixes computer triumphantly*

In XP, go to the View menu and click "Choose Details". It gives you the whole list to pick and choose from.

And yes, their new defaults are stupid. :(

Oh yay! That WORKED! I am so happy now! Thank you!

As [livejournal.com profile] sageness said go to the View menu and click "Choose Details" and then right-click on the list that says name, size, type, etc and choose either date-file-added and/or modified. That should do the trick.
