Another step forward?

I don't know if any of you have heard about the Angie Zapata 'transgender murder' case which has been going on for the past week or so down the road from me in Greeley, CO.  As I have friends and relatives who are transpeople, I've been following it closely (and been disgusted by some of the awful comments I've read on news sites!), and I just heard that the jury just came back with both a 1st Degree Murder and Hate Crime conviction for the guy who killed her. I am so, so relieved that they didn't wuss out on this one.

I've been watching the trial on CourtTV, and I've been disgusted by the "blame the victim" defense. I'm thrilled to hear that they found the bastard guilty of first degree murder and a hate crime.

That 'blame the victim' thing is what's nauseating me in the comment sections on the newspapers. What amazed me is that a jury from Greeley, which is not a city known for being liberal by any means, took less than 3 hours to reach this verdict. It gives me hope for the future.

Such a relief.

Didn't Angie Zapata save someone several years ago? I have a very vague memory (most of my memories are vague these days) that she was driving along and was flagged down by someone who was being stalked and was trying to get to the police station and Angie drove her there at great risk from some guy with a gun. Have I got it all wrong? Whether I have or not, it is very good news that her killer is going to be held accountable.
