Castle

Anyone besides me and [livejournal.com profile] theamusedone watching Nathan Filion's new show, Castle? It may not be 'realistic' (anyone who thinks novelists live like rock stars needs a reality check!) but I love the characters and I've liked the show since the start. I thought this episode was particularly good, especially the way Rick absorbs what's happening in the A-Plot and how it affects his relationship with Alexis (his daughter). Really nicely done. The 'are you taking drugs' scene was really very moving.

And of course, I have to quote one of the first exhanges of the ep, one which had me LOLing.

Rick: "Anything I need to know?"
Alexis: "The 70's are back."
Rick: "They're like The Highlander, they just won't die."

::snerk:: SO true.

I'm watching it. It's a little non-realistic...but a fun light cozy mystery series.

I think Castle's lifestyle comes more from family money. And I love his mother.

[identity profile] kelliem.livejournal.com 2009-03-24 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose that could be. But since his mom appears to have been a Broadway actress and she lives with them, I kinda figured she was broke. Maybe it was Rick's dad's money.

Especially since the line in last night's episode about him being thrown out of every prep school in Nyc. So I've been assuming he's a male celebutante who happens to write bestselling books, kind of like Bruce Wayne's persona.

[identity profile] kelliem.livejournal.com 2009-03-24 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Excellent point. Okay, now I can quit balking at my suspension of disbelief. ;D

I laughed so hard at that line last night! Yes, I am watching this, and enjoying Nathan Fillion immensely.

He definitely makes the show, that's for sure. ;D

We're both watching it at casa la wolf. It's like McDonalds fast food tv. LOL

[identity profile] kelliem.livejournal.com 2009-03-24 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It kinda is. Tasty if you're in the mood, but definitely not haute cuisine. ;D

It's a fun hour but nothing to write home about. Though I DID like the Highlander reference.

I've tried to watch Castle, but I can't get past the shock of learning that Rick's a jerk and thus, not a very sympathetic character for me. About the only character I've liked so far is the daughter.

[identity profile] kelliem.livejournal.com 2009-03-24 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I don't think Rick's a jerk. He just has a persona he's developed as a shield which is a bit jerkish (rather like Tony in NCIS but for some reason I don't find Rick nearly as annoying as Tony!). But really, he's not, and I think this week's ep went a long way toward highlighting that. Also the bit at the end of last week's ep where he takes out the photo of his daughter.

I will admit though, that the daughter's character really is good.

[identity profile] imkalena.livejournal.com 2009-03-24 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, Tony, Tony. *shakes head sadly*

Cameos by James Patterson and Steven Cannell FTW!!! That was actually my favorite part of the first ep. I was hooting. :)

Jim was like, "Hey, wait, is that Donald Bellissario?" Close. :)

I haven't had a chance to see last night's yet, but tonight I will.

Yes! Cracked me the hell up.

Huh. I may have to watch it again with the eye towards it being a shield; I might be able to tolerate it that way.

[identity profile] imkalena.livejournal.com 2009-03-24 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
What was the jerkish part that really put you off? I'm genuinely curious.

He's certainly a dick to the woman detective, but other factors point to him being not so much. He's reasonably friendly with his exes -- works with one of them, how insane is that?; lets his Mom live with him, obviously likes her, and it's mutual; has had custody of his daughter since she was very little (implied), she's a Very Good Daughter and they also like each other.

He has a bunch of friends, although they're male friends and thus they don't care about the same kinds of jerkishness that I might.*G*

The way he tries to schmooze everyone -- the "I'm so charming you gotta love me even when I'm bad" attitude; the way his daughter seems more grown-up than he is. That kind of attitude is the kind that drives me crazy in RL. ::shrug:: Kellie suggested it's a shield for him, so I may be able to watch it with that angle in mind, but in general I tend to like characters I wouldn't mind knowing in RL.

[identity profile] grey853.livejournal.com 2009-03-24 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm watching, but not really impressed so far. I adore Fillion and wanted to like it, but the whole dynamic between the leads really puts me off. Plus, the character is so childish and generally annoying. It's a shame. I'd love to see this written as a real drama and not some hybrid between comedy/drama.

I do like the daughter and Castle's relationship with her. Right now that's about the only saving grace, well, that and Fillion being so damn cute, not that I'm superficial or anything. *g*

[identity profile] kelliem.livejournal.com 2009-03-24 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they're trying for a vibe like NCIS has, sort of a drama with comedic touches, though they seem to be having trouble striking a balance. The dynamic between the leads is very reminiscent of Kate/Tony in early NCIS, which did get old fast, so I hope they tone that down.

[identity profile] grey853.livejournal.com 2009-03-24 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I never liked the whole Kate vs Tony dynamic. I get bored with the constant bickering and fueding. If that doesn't change, I probably won't keep watching.

[identity profile] kelliem.livejournal.com 2009-03-24 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't mind Kate/Tony at first but it got more and more grating and by the time her character left the show, I was MORE than ready for either her or Tony to bite it.

(BTW, I love your meowy kitty icon!)

Thanks. I got that from [livejournal.com profile] caugraphics

Kate/Tony in early NCIS

Yeah, that's irritating the crap outta me. Were I her, I'd find a way to put a stop to it. Actually, the whole Tony putting down McGee thing irritates me, too. And I *know* that goes on FOREVER. At least Ziva doesn't take any of Tony's crap.

[identity profile] tpeej.livejournal.com 2009-03-24 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the show. Nathan is so good. Give the man a phone book and let him read it.

[identity profile] kelliem.livejournal.com 2009-03-24 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Nathan is definitely on my Phone Book List. ;D

[identity profile] tpeej.livejournal.com 2009-03-24 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with that one.

I'm watching it, mainly because of Nathan, but am enjoying it in a mindless, look-up-from-the-computer-occasionally way.

[identity profile] kelliem.livejournal.com 2009-03-24 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It's definitely not Heavy Drama. ;)

I watch it too and it amuses me a lot. BTW, that daughter of his is far too grown up to be real. ;-)

[identity profile] kelliem.livejournal.com 2009-03-24 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I find her quite believable-- from personal experience. Kids at that age can be surprisingly mature in some ways. Not all ways but I've known more than one teen who was more mature than their dad in some ways.

Fair enough.

I am so still watching and being amused by it! The second and third episodes were not quite as delightful as the first, but yes, such the good time and Nathan is a delight to watch!
