kelliem: icy lakefront sunrise (what?)

Ah, the joys of Academe. I got a call today, notifying me that as of May 1st I will finally have the promotion and raise that we've been working on for the past 4 months. Well, sort of. It's one grade lower, and only half as much money as I was hoping for, but hey, beggars can't be choosers in this economy right? Anyway, I got to enjoy that for all of a quarter hour.

About 15 minutes after I got the call about my promotion, I got another call, telling me I can't hire someone for the front desk position (I'm currently covering both jobs, and have been since December) until July 28th because there's a state rule that you can't hire at the same level as an abolished position for a year, and that's when they abolished the job last year.

Now, HR has known for MONTHS that this was what we were planning to do (which is hire a person whose job was abolished last year much against our wishes to replace me in the front-desk position). I've told them repeatedly. They even told me it was a good idea. So why couldn't they have mentioned this little problem MONTHS ago?

There may be a workaround-- but to do it I have to rewrite the front-desk position PDQ *again* and try to bump up the responsibility level to an AAIII from an AAII because we *could* hire at a higher position level. And that means it will be several days before the new PDQ for that position goes over to HR and that means they will have ANOTHER F***ING 30 DAYS to respond to *this* request which means the soonest we could hire, even with this workaround, would be the end of May. Plus I have to make sure that the person we want to rehire has tested for and passed the AAIII exam.

*tearing out hair*

Some days I just feel like I'm pounding my head against the wall.
